Family carers of people with disability often carry grief that goes unrecognised. Their losses are rarely singular: grief for milestones that never came, for an imagined future, for their own foregone possibilities, and for shifting roles and relationships. This grief is frequently anticipatory, recurring, and disenfranchised, unfolding alongside ongoing love and active care, not after a death. This workshop explores the distinctive shape of carer grief, including chronic sorrow and ambiguous loss, and how service structures and the "still-present" nature of the cared-for person can silence it. Practitioners will develop validating approaches to assessment and intervention that make room for grief without pathologising the caregiving relationship.
